Bible Reading 101

Do you ever struggle with consistently reading your Bible? Do you find it hard to understand it and just end up quitting?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, then you’re not alone and this post is for you!

Myth or Truth: You have to start reading the Bible from the beginning.

MYTH!!! You do not have to start in the first book of the Bible (Genesis). In fact, it’s not really recommended. Let’s be honest here… the Bible can sometimes be confusing. But the Bible is also life-changing. The Word is a way we can receive revelation and hear the voice of God. It’s part of our relationship with Jesus. And the more we stay consistent, the hungrier we get for the Word and the easier it gets to read.

So where do I start?

A great place to start is in any of the Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John. The Gospels are the stories of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. All four gospels are essentially the same story told in different perspectives. I personally recommend starting in Luke.

How much should I read a day?

The main key to reading the Bible isn’t necessarily focusing on how much you read (at least at first), but it is all about CONSISTENCY. I cannot stress this enough. It’s going to be hard at first. You may hit a boring chapter, you may feel discouraged, or you just feel like you don’t have enough time in your crazy day. Trust me, I understand. But if you commit to reading every day no matter what your schedule looks like, then it will eventually become natural to you.

My challenge to you is to start with one chapter a day. Once you get this in your system, God’s Word will bless you so much that one chapter a day won’t be enough!

Let’s circle back to consistency.

It’s hard committing to reading your bible every day. I am not writing this blog as if I don’t go through slumps myself. We are all human and fall short. Once you miss one day, you start to get into a vicious cycle of missing two days, then three…

After getting out of your bible reading groove, you start to trick yourself into thinking that it’s too late to start again. That’s a LIE from the enemy. It’s never too late to start back up!

If you don’t read your Bible yet, then I leave you with a challenge:

Start in the book of Luke and commit to reading at least one chapter a day.

If you are already reading, then I challenge you to start reading a little more than you usually do.

And lastly…

Find an accountability partner. Someone that can keep you accountable for reading and vice versa. Having someone you trust to do it with will make things easier, especially on the days you just don’t feel like reading.

Don’t be so hard on yourself. You got this!!

IT IS WORTH IT :)
