Take a Seat With Skylar

What a Friend We Have in Jesus

Myth or Truth: Living for Jesus makes your life perfect and you will never struggle with anything again.

MYTH!!! The Bible doesn’t say that when we accept Jesus into our lives and follow Him that our lives will be perfect. What it does say is that when we face adversity, we have an everlasting father who will carry all of our burdens. We have a forever friend who is the best listener and advice giver.

Scripture Check:

Matthew 11:28-30 NLT

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. [29] Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. [30] For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

I had the privilege of interviewing a sweet friend who has experienced the realness of anxiety, but who has also experienced the realness of Jesus.

Skylar’s Story

Skylar Neal is a 20 year old girl from Houma, Louisiana who genuinely loves people and Jesus. She grew up Catholic and went to Catholic school all her life. She says she never truly understood the importance of her faith growing up. It was everything she knew and she didn’t see it as special. She prayed and prayed, but never truly felt a connection with God.

A Shifting

Skylar says even though she was outgoing and extroverted, she struggled with anxiety. One day in High School, she prayed very specifically for guidance and to know what her purpose was.

The very next day in her PE class, one of Skylar’s friends came up to her with a letter she wrote. The friend had been praying and felt a tug on her heart to write this letter from God to Skylar.

“When I feel my faith diminishing, I hold on to that letter.”

After this experience, Skylar knew there was more. She may have once viewed her upbringing as forceful, but she then saw it as a blessing. She realized the importance of her faith and that we have a wonderful God who is always listening.

“Now I know you ask for anything and he’s listening to everything.”

Prayer

Skylar shares that she had prayed all her life, but didn’t realize you could just speak to Him as a friend. As she commutes to her college campus every day, Skylar makes her drive her prayer time. She says it’s the time in her day that she can speak to Jesus about everything going on in her life.

Advice

I asked Skylar if she had any advice for people trying to either start their relationship with Jesus or reconnect with Him:

  • Just talk to Him

  • Journal your prayers

  • Make time for Him

“Make the time and it will do wonders in your life!”

I hope you loved Skylar's story just as much as I did!
